Landslides are a significant geologic hazard in California. Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. specializes in landslide hazard and hazard reduction projects. We are experts at identifying and mitigating all types of landslides ranging from small soil slips to massive bedrock landslides. Our exceptional knowledge of process geomorphology and expertise at field investigations allow us to obtain the critical data needed to define the geometry of the landslide and to design and implement a logical repair. Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. has expertise in:

Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. has expertise in all levels of geologic, geomorphic and engineering geologic site investigations. We conduct feasibility studies, soils investigations for engineers, geologic hazard evaluation and mitigation studies, landslide evaluations, fault investigations, liquefaction studies, and EIR planning studies. We employ the following investigation techniques to provide quality results:
Geologic reconnaissance mapping Interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery
Geologic and geomorphic mapping Geologic site characterization
Logging boring and core samples (above) Logging of exploratory Trenches and Test Pits
Geologic mapping during earthwork Monitoring and analyzing geotechnical instrumentation
Down-hole logging of drilled shafts Seismic refraction surveys
Establishing proper building setbacks from active fault traces is critical to land planning decisions. Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. conducts fault investigations in compliance with the Alquist-Priolo Earthquake Fault Zoning Act. With nearly 5 miles of exploratory trench logging experience, we understand what it takes both to locate the active fault trace and to clear areas within the A-P zone for residential construction. We have a thorough understanding of the building regulations regarding earthquake faults and provide consultation services for land planning near active fault traces. We prepare detailed graphic logs of the exposures and use survey data to provide planning-level recommendations for building setbacks and underground utility line crossings. We also conduct third-party peer review of fault investigations for government agencies and private companies.

Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. offers litigation support services, including pre-litigation investigations and providing geologic expert opinion and testimony to address the following geologic issues:

NOA is a well-documented health hazard. We are experienced in Naturally Occurring Asbestos (NOA) identification and remediation regulations. Identification of potential NOA bearing rocks requires the expertise of a professional geologist. Once these rock types are identified, we document the locations on a plan and use state certified testing labs to perform Carb-435 and Total Metals testing (standard NOA concentration tests) on representative samples we collect in the field. The lab testing results indicate the potential NOA concentrations at the site. Based on the detected concentrations, we prepare technical recommendations for earthwork handling of these materials or in-place methods to reduce the hazards. We can prepare a Soil Management Plan that lists the protocols and precautions for earthwork jobs that plan to excavate and transport potential NOA bearing materials.

Engineering geologic review of earthwork operations is critical to the long-term success of graded slopes and slope repairs. Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. gained a large portion of its experience observing, mapping and directing grading excavations for keyways and slope repairs. Our expertise in this area is unparalleled and we make logical decisions in the field to work within the site parameters and project goals. We provide our clients with recommendations that keep projects moving forward while avoiding future stability issues.
Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. can install, monitor and interpret

SLOPE INCLINOMETERS to measure slope creep or landslide movements in the subsurface.
PIEZOMETERS to measure water levels and their change over time.
MINI-SEISMOGRAPHS for vibration monitoring (see below)
We can monitor existing instrument installations by either obtaining the historic data or taking new baseline readings. Our expertise with these instruments combined with our strong analytical skills allow us to properly interpret the data and evaluate their implications.
Vibration monitoring can be performed at the boundary of earthwork construction sites, in-fill construction projects, adjacent to industrial buildings or at quarry sites. The data from the mini-seismograph used in the monitoring and analysis can provide clients the data needed to defend against frivolous lawsuits over "new cracks in my house or foundation that formed after your operations started".
Geologic Hazard Abatement Districts (GHAD) manage defined areas of open space land surrounding residential developments. Within the district, GHAD managers plan for the prevention, mitigation and abatement of geologic hazards that threaten real property. Working with GHAD managers and/or law firms, we prepare the Plan of Control, perform annual field observation reports, review technical plans, evaluate areas of geologic hazards, slope deformation, install and monitor subsurface geotechnical instrumentation.
HOA's commonly have maintenance responsibilities over open space land and need to plan for the prevention and mitigation of geologic hazards that threaten real property or site improvements. We prepare site observation reports that discuss the local geologic conditions, delineate geologic instabilities such as landslides or erosion observed at the site as well as any potential maintenance issues with the drainage facilities.
Our strong understanding of structural geology, regional geology, petrology, geologic history and mining techniques allow us to provide quality geological consulting services to land owners, quarry operators and government agencies throughout the mining and reclamation plan process. We conduct field investigations and provide consultation services for resource evaluations, quarry pit planning studies, slope stability evaluations during mining, reclamation planning and grading.
We offer third-party peer review services to government agencies and private companies regarding Alquist-Priolo fault investigations, landslide evaluations, engineering geologic and geotechnical engineering projects. Additionally, we can work with developers or grading contractors to peer review the performance of grading operations and review technical recommendations made by project professionals.
Geophysical surveys can provide a wealth of knowledge over a broad area for a relatively low cost. We perform seismic refraction surveys to determine depth to bedrock, overburden fill thickness, or bedrock excavation characteristics (rippability).
Ryan Geological Consulting, Inc. is committed to on-going geologic research and public education. We have contributed towards paleoseismic studies, earthquake fault evaluations, tsunami inundation studies, and marshland vegetation studies. We also give hazard talks to schools. We would be glad to discuss partnering with other consultants or researchers to continue the goal of power through education and research.
